Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut Review

I have been wanting to write a review about Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut for sometime now. I have been using it just over a year, right after it came out in fact, since Copenhagen gave away so many coupons for it and the fact that the price for it remains cheap. I think this must be the longest Copenhagen have promoted a product and kept the price low.

Just the other day I bought a can of Longhorn Wintergreen at Stripes (a gas station mini-mart) and the cashier gave me a coupon for Copenhagen Wintergreen. I also got quite a few free cans through coupons not to mention a Bass Pro Shops Camo Cap, a coffee mug, and I think some kind of multi-tool.

In any case, I think I have been using Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut because it is decent, but more importantly because it has been cheap for such a long time (in the price range of Grizzly, Longhorn, etc., but cheaper than Skoal and Kodiak).

The Can (now has warnings all over it)

The Good and the Bad of Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut

When I read that Copenhagen was coming out with a Long Cut Wintergreen I thought it was great news and visited my local shops often to keep an eye out for it. I remember having my first dip with it and thinking that I liked the flavor and that the tobacco was moist. What I did not like about it was that it was hard to pack and that some of the tobacco seems kind of hard and tends to "ball up" in the can.

I don't know how else to explain it but the tobacco does not seem very consistent in the can. Sometimes it seems to be cut well and evenly and other times there are a lot of small loose bits of tobacco and tight balls of tobacco in the can.  The same can be said for the moisture of Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut.

Often I feel the tobacco is too moist which causes your fingers to stain when packing in a dip. It can be almost juicy, which some other brands of snuff could use a little more of (Redman Wintergreen and Longhorn are pretty dry and almost require you to put a few drops of water in the can to get it to the right degree of moisture).

Pros and Cons of Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut

Pros

  1. It's cheap. Copenhagen is premium tobacco, but I am not sure that Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut is. I know that they wanted a piece of Skoal Wintergreen's business as well as Grizzly's. I am sure that this is why Copenhagen have kept their price low on the new Long Cut flavors (Wintergreen, Straight, and Natural), pretty much right at the level of Grizzly's and other non-premium brands.
  2. The flavor is OK. It is decent, but does it win best Wintergreen? I don't think so.
  3. The can design and amount of promotional products that Copenhagen gave away almost makes you want to like this Long Cut. Anyone play the hunting game for a Bass Pro Shops Gift Certificate? How many free cans did I get for Long Cut Wintergreen? At least ten, if not more.

Cons

  1. As much as I want to like it, I really would rather chew Skoal Wintergreen or Grizzly. Kodiak burns too much and has too many balls (tight wads of tobacco) for me. Grizzly Wintergreen Long Cut is better I think for just a little more money and it packs better and tastes better.
  2. Hard on the mouth and gums. I feel Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut is rougher on the mouth and gums than other chew and maybe this is to the quality of the cut of the tobacco as I mentioned earlier in this article.
  3. Hard to pack. Seems harder than other Wintergreens to pack. Difficult to handle I think compared to Grizzly or Skoal.
  4. The moistness is inconsistent.

Conclusion

I have been a big fan of regular old Copenhagen Snuff for years. Right out of the fridge Copenhagen is hard to beat. I was excited about Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut the day it has come out and have used it along with other brands for over a year. That being said, I do not feel that this is on par with Copenhagen Snuff or the brand of Copenhagen. Both the Wintergreen and Straight Long Cuts seem to be made of a lesser quality.

For all of the reasons above I feel that I would rather buy Skoal, Grizzly, or another brand of wintergreen over Copenhagen's Wintergreen. However, it is still a decent dip at $1-2 cheaper than the premium brands. I don't want to ever pay $5 or over for a can of chew and that is what Skoal has been at for quite a while with Copenhagen's Long Cuts being anywhere from $2.63-$3.89 per can (this has been the price over the last year in the Western States, it may differ where you live).

It has been hard not to buy it considering it is the cheapest can at Walmart for example. It is Copenhagen and it is cheap so I naturally buy it. If the price goes up I will not be buying it, I will buy Grizzly with a can here and there of Redman or Longhorn or another budget brand. I just wish Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut was just a little better and I think this review would have been more favorable.

I think that when Copenhagen Wintergreen Long Cut came out we all expected it to be a new premium flavor that was at it's "Try it Now!" price for just a limited time. Now, I think we have realized that this is a budget chew product that is not a premium and will not be priced higher in the future because it is priced right where it belongs, in the budget tobacco price range along with Happy Days, Longhorn, Redman, Husky, Kayak, and all the others.

Hey fellas, let me know what you think in the comments.  Do you love it?  What do you chew and where do you buy it? How do you like Copenhagen Long Cut?  Appreciate the feedback.

Dude, please give me back the minute I spent reading this. Copenhagen Wintergreen is good. Your revie of it is ridiculous. Are you the Roger Ebert of smokeless tobacco? Talking about it staining your fingers? C'mon brother, pretty weak.

@patrick can't give you the minute back, but you are entitled to your own opinion. I thought it was good too, but then I realized that it was cheap and not premium. Check the price, it is still a buck cheaper than skoal or reg cope, and it has been on the shelves for 2 years. It is simply a cheap rival to the popular grizzly. If you use dip, you know what I'm talking about. Anyway, i don't think it is bad, i'd just rather dip something else. Hey thanks for the comment bro.

Not what i expected comming from copenhagen... still thought its cheap and in my opinion better than most wintergreens i actually hate wintergreen usually i dip straight redseal or skoal if not copenhagen snuff but i havent bought anything but cope wintergreen for about 4 months. it does seem to take a larger toll on my gums though so thats about the only bad thing i can say about it. the price combined with te flavor is great forget all that difficulty packing it and tight tabacoo balls haha who cares?

I love the flavor of Copenhagen Wintergreen but it is destroying my gums and I am going to switch back to Copenhagen Natural after I finish my roll

Cope Wintergreen is the best dip on the Market right now, Grizz has a stronger flavor but is rough on the GUMMS!!! I have also heard that Grizz puts fiberglass in their dip and cope uses ground up fish I do not know if this is true, but Cope is a solid product, ans most importantly cant beat the price...!!

i got to say i hate wintergreen flavored dip.

But i decided to try the copenhagen wintergreen because well.. the tin looked very appealing to me.

And i was very surprised with this wintergreen dip. The wintergreen flavor is not as overpowering as the grizzly green and i was actually able to enjoy my first ever wintergreen chew! (although i probably wont be buying another one)

i have been dipping cope winter green since it came out it is a good dip for me because i am still in school and it is easy for me to swallow in class. however i do agree that it is budget dip just because of th price but i do think that it is at the top of the budget dip list and for that i will dip it

hello i have read your article and i dipped grizzly until cope winter green came out and i tried to go back to grizzly it leaves a nasty taste that cope wintergreen doesn't i was supprised how it burned i love the burn of it and if it goes up in price i will pay for it because its worth it grizzly is 3.19 at the store i buy it at and cope wintergreen is 3.99 and i pay more for the flavor its the only thing that curves my taste

thank you, osa

Those little hard balls you find in the dip are a pain in the butt, and prevent a good long dip without you having to yank your lip back to break them up a bit. You're best best is to try and work around them. Cope Wintergreen is definately my favorite dip so far though.
